Catholic Relief Services Special Collection - March 14-15, 2015

The Catholic Relief Services Collection supports Catholic Church organizations that carry out international relief and solidarity efforts. Programs include relief and resettlement for victims of persecution, war, and natural disasters; development projects to improve living conditions for the poor; legal and support services for poor immigrants; peace and reconciliation work for people suffering from violence; and advocacy on behalf of the powerless.

Lambs for Widows in Afghanistan

This collection helped make it possible for women in rural Afghanistan to earn a form of income. Women with husbands are able to support their families through work in the home while their husbands labor in the fields to generate a cash income. Widows, however, must rely on whatever food their families can give them and do not have the means to buy other necessities like household goods or medicine that require cash.

With funding from this collection, Catholic Relief Services (CRS) offered these women a way to develop a livelihood. In a village outside of Herat, CRS provided a female lamb to each widow along with instructions on how to keep their lambs healthy. Now, some of the lambs have produced their first offspring. This will give each owner twice as much wool and milk to use and sell. Along with money for much-needed supplies, the lambs are giving these women hope for a better future.

Helping Jesus in Disguise

In keeping with the theme "Help Jesus in Disguise," the funds collected through the CRS Collection support vital Catholic programs that share in the Catholic mission of promoting the sacredness of human life and the dignity of the human person.

In a press release dated September 11, 2013, the U.S. bishops stated their full support of CRS:

"The U.S. Catholic bishops stand firmly behind CRS in its commitment to promote and defend human dignity and the sacredness of every human life from the moment of conception until natural death, and at every moment in between."

Where Does the CRS Collection Go?
