Priesthood Sunday - October 28-29, 2017
On Priesthood Sunday, we honor the priests serving our community and support our retired priests by giving to the Diocesan Priests Retirement Plan Second Collection.
This Sunday we celebrate National Priesthood Sunday (http://priestsunday.org), a day set aside to honor the priesthood in the United States. It is a day to reflect upon and affirm the role of the priesthood in the life of the Church and to honor all of the dedicated priests who serve at our parishes in the diocese.
The second collection today is to support the Annual Diocesan Priests Retirement Plan. All the proceeds from the collection will go to support the retirement plan and provide needed support for our retired diocesan priests and those who will be retiring in the future. This collection is separate from the collection for retired religious priests, brothers and sisters taken up in December.
Letter from Bishop Edward J. Burns
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
Coming to the Diocese of Dallas earlier this year has been such a joy and I am continually impressed with the priests and the people of this diocese. It is so evident that people here love being Catholic and strive in so many ways to grow in their faith and bear witness to the love of Jesus. It is also evident that they love their priests and that the priests are very generous in their priestly ministry. I have also been impressed with the way in which many of our retired priests continue to serve in our parishes, often helping with the
celebration of the Eucharist and hearing confessions.
I want to make sure that they are well cared for in their retirement after a life of service to the people of the diocese. Many have spent 45 years or more in priestly ministry, often very quietly carrying on the essential work of the church in preaching, celebrating the sacraments and administering the life of our parishes.
As we observe next weekend Priesthood Sunday, October 28/29, we honor all of the priests who serve in our parishes and in other diocesan ministries. It will also be the day for the annual second collection for the Diocesan Priests Retirement Plan. This collection is separate from the collection in December for Retired Religious which does not include our diocesan priests. All proceeds from this collection are for the Dallas Diocesan Priest's Retirement Plan and will be used to assure the viability of the pension plan and to support the present and future needs of our retired diocesan priests.
Thank you for your generous support and please pray for our active and retired priests. May God continue to bless you and all the members of your family.
Faithfully yours in Christ,
Most Reverend Edward J. Burns
Bishop of Dallas
