Growing interest in the Synod Listening Session
More than 300 people have already committed to joining others for the next synod listening session on Saturday, 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. at the University of Dallas. The topic will focus on Catholic Education.
(Irving)- “Synod” simply means “meeting.” While meetings happen regularly in dioceses, a diocesan synod is a special kind of meeting called by the diocesan bishop that brings together a large group of people from varied backgrounds to discuss important topics.
More than 300 people have already committed to joining others for the next synod listening session on Saturday, 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. at the University of Dallas. The topic will focus on Catholic Education. And, in a year where parental choice priorities are part of the 88th Texas legislative agenda, there’s sure to be a lot of discussion about the empowerment of parents to determine the best educational environment for their children whether that be public, charter, Catholic, private or homeschool.
“Our listening session covers education from pre-k through university. This is a truly relevant topic and likely why we’re seeing heightened interest in participation from parents and families,” explained Lacy de La Garza, the chair of the synod preparatory commission.
de La Garza who oversees the planning and execution for the first three phases of the diocesan synod says all are welcome.
“I encourage teachers, students, administrators, community leaders, and parents to join us. You don’t have to be Catholic or have children in Catholic schools to participate.”
The Catholic Diocese of Dallas formerly opened the Diocese of Dallas Synod in 2021, a first since 1934. Believing the need for the Church to be a “listening Church” a number of listening sessions have already taken place and only a handful are left before the next phase of the synod process begins.
