 Synoptic Gospels

The Gospels according to Matthew, Mark, and Luke are referred as Synoptic Gospels due to their similarity in structure and content as opposed to the gospel of John which presents a different narrative about Jesus’ person, life, ministry, death, and resurrection. On the other hand, each of the authors presents the concerns and emphases that are relevant to their audiences.


At the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • · Describe the process of writing the gospels
  • · Explain what a is parable and the purpose of its use
  • · Explain what is understood by “synoptic gospels”
  • · Identify the three synoptic Gospels and their audiences
  • · Mention the main similarities and differences among these gospels
  • · Explain the “synoptic problem” and the two-source hypothesis
  • · Explain the messianic secret in Mark’s gospel
  • · Identify Jesus as the Teacher in Mathew’s gospel
  • · Understand the universality of Luke’s gospel
  • · Highlight the main differences between the synoptic gospels and the gospel of John
  • · Define high and low Christology\
