Amid the towering steel and glass structures of America’s 9th largest city, sits a tranquil, spiritual Oasis of Hope know as St. Jude Chapel.
Established 45 years ago in its present location, 1521 Main Street, St. Jude Chapel welcomes and serves visitors from throughout the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex, and from around the world. It was founded under the spiritual leadership of Arthur Hughes and a group of leading Dallas business people who envisioned a Chapel in the heart of Downtown Dallas to serve the growing and vibrant city center. Mr. Hughes would soon be known to the world as the saintly Mgrs. Hughes, having been ordained to the priesthood at the young age of 76, and St. Jude Chapel would become known as an Oasis of Hope for all who enter its doors on Main Street.
The mission of St. Jude Chapel is to serve the spiritual needs of those who live and/or work in Downtown Dallas, as well as many people from throughout the Dallas area who daily discover the elegant beauty of this spiritual gem of our city. The impact of our Chapel extends well beyond the boundaries of the urban heart of North Texas. We welcome countless guests from around the country and the world who travel to Dallas for work and pleasure. St. Jude Chapel has become a beloved destination on Main Street, and a respected partner of our city.
While St. Jude Chapel serves the Catholic Faithful, we warmly welcome our brothers and sisters from all religious and spiritual traditions; indeed, anyone who seeks a quiet and tranquil place to rest, pray and meditate will find the Chapel to be an Oasis of Hope in the midst of a hectic and fast paced life. St. Jude, one of the Twelve Apostles, has been revered throughout the centuries as the Patron Saint of the Hopeless. In honor of our Patron, therefore, St. Jude Chapel seeks to be a beacon of faith, hope and love in the heart of Big D.
St. Jude Chapel opened its doors on April 28, 1968, and was formally dedicated by Bishop Thomas K. Gorman on September 15th of the same year. We give glory and thanksgiving to God for Mgrs. Hughes and those early pioneers who made St. Jude Chapel a reality. We are grateful to God, as well, for allowing St. Jude Chapel to serve the needs of so many people over the past forty-five years. We seek God’s grace to continue to extend our mission well into the future by being an essential partner in the growth of Downtown Dallas.
