YEAR OF FAITH: Pope Francis Recommends a Holy Hour on the Solemnity of Corpus Christi
Publish date: Tuesday, May 28, 2013
From Dr. Patricia J. Hughes, Director of the Office of Worship - Catholic Diocese of Dallas
In observing and celebrating the Year of Faith, the Pontifical Council for the Promotion of the New Evangelization recommends that each parish observe a Holy Hour (Solemn Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament) this Sunday, June 2. In Rome on that day at 5 p.m., the Holy Father will preside over a special Eucharistic adoration, marking the centrality of the Eucharist in our lives.
Ideally, parishes and cathedrals worldwide would be able to unite in prayer at that same time, which would be at 10a.m. Dallas time. Bishop Douglas Deshotel has pointed out to pastors in the diocese that it may be a challenge to link with the rest of the world at the exact time that the Pope does, due to the typical Sunday Mass schedule. In this spirit of the Pope’s wish, continues Bishop Deshotel, the Holy Hour could be held at a more convenient time on this coming Sunday: perhaps after the last Mass of the day.
It is also important to note that Solemn Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament flows to and from the celebration of the Eucharist, and is typically inappropriate while Mass is being celebrated. To mark the Solemnity of Corpus Christi, therefore, it would be good for parishes to unite with the Holy Father in prayer by a special Prayer of the Faithful invocation, “For those who will gather in prayer before the Eucharist especially today, and for all who receive and cherish the Body and Blood of Christ, that we will be united in in Eucharistic faith with our brothers and sisters throughout the world, we pray to the Lord…”
