Students and families throughout the Diocese of Dallas are celebrating National Catholic Schools Week, January 27h – February 1st. The first Catholic school opened its doors in the Diocese of Dallas in 1874. Today, there are 38 schools and an enrollment of nearly 15,000 students in the local Catholic school system, led by Superintendent Sister Gloria Cain.

There are a variety of events at all campuses in the diocese to allow students to reflect and have fun while celebrating their Catholic school education. Many of these events involve an aspect of community service for the students and learning more about the needs of people and environment in their local area and around the world.

Wednesday, January 30 – 8:15 a.m. - St. Patrick Catholic School, 9635 Ferndale, Dallas, 75238
All students in the school will hear John Reng Ajak Gieu, a Lost Boy of the Sudan, who will speak on his experience, how education has changed his life, and the tremendous need for education in his homeland. The students will also raise money by charging $1 or more to wear jeans that day instead of their uniforms. The money will be sent to support the thatched-roof village school that Gieu attended in the Sudan.

Friday, Feb. 1 -10:30 a.m. - Good Shepherd Catholic School, 214 S. Garland Ave., Garland, 75040
Students will present the school’s annual recycling fashion show. Students use materials such as plastic bags, cardboard boxes and other recycled materials to create designs. The fashions will reflect the theme of favorite desserts. Creations will depict such sweet treats as cotton candy, an ice cream float with a cherry on top, a slice of pie topped with Cool Whip and cookies and milk.
