Job Description

The position reports to The Chancellor and Judicial Vicar
Must hold a JCL from a Pontifical University

General Summary of the Position

• Aids the Chancellor with canonical research as well as with the drafting of letters, administrative decrees and other canonical documents
• Oversees the administrative operations of the Tribunal, helps direct the marriage nullity process (approximately 500 total cases per year) and supervises the granting of permissions and dispensations for marriages in the Church
(approximately 1,000 prenuptial packets per year)

Job Requirements

Essential Duties and Responsibilities of the Position

• Advises the Chancellor with issues related to canon law, including, but not limited to, General Norms, the Munus Docendi, the Munus Sanctificandi, Temporal Goods and Penal Law
• Helps draft letters, decrees and other canonical documents as instructed by the Chancellor
• Researches and consults with the Chancellor on canonical and theological questions in order to evaluate imprimatur, mandatum and similar requests
• Aids the Chancellor in the research and drafting of new canonical processes, procedures and particular law of the Diocese
• Establishes policies in consultation with the Judicial Vicar and Chancellor for the proper implementation of canon law in nullity cases as well as for permissions and dispensations
• Manages administrative activity in the tribunal and helps direct the instruction of all marriage nullity cases
• Reviews and manages the Tribunal annual budget
• Ensures that a proper canonical library is maintained
• Maintains statistics and prepares Tribunal statistical reports for Rome and for the Canon Law Society of America
• Trains other Assessors, Auditors, Procurator-Advocates, parish clergy and lay ministers in regard to Tribunal ministry (marriage nullity cases, permissions and dispensations for marriages and sacramental record keeping)
• Ensures that canonical records are maintained in accordance with diocesan policy and serves as a consultant on maintaining sacramental records in the Diocese and in the parishes
• Participates in annual canonical conventions as a diocesan representative, and for purposes of continuing education
• Serves on the Canonical Affairs Committee

Education and Experience:

• Holds a JCL from a Pontifical university
• Previous experience in a tribunal

Additional Preferred Skills:

• Previous experience in a chancellor’s office
• Civil law experience
