Diocese Adds Name to List of Priests with Credible Allegations
Peter Barusseau was a French priest who filled-in at three area churches over the one-year period of 1960-1961.
An allegation of abuse that occurred in 1960 has resulted in the Diocese of Dallas adding the name of a priest from France to its list of now 32 clergy members who have received credible allegations of sexual abuse of minors over the last 70 years. Peter Barusseau was a French priest who filled-in at three area churches over the one-year period of 1960-1961. Born in 1909, Barusseau is believed to be dead but the Diocese is attempting to confirm his date of death with his home diocese in France.
Police were notified of the allegation and the Diocesan Review Board evaluated the charge and recommended to Bishop Burns that Barusseau’s name be added to the list.
According to church records Barusseau substituted for other priests at Immaculate Conception in Denton, St. Anthony in Dallas and St. Mary in Sherman. “I continue to urge anyone who was the victim of abuse to come forward because, as promised in January, we will continue to update this list as needed,” said Bishop Edward Burns. “Our diocese continues to cooperate with law enforcement as they investigate outstanding allegations and remain committed to creating a safe environment throughout the diocese.”
