In the first Apostolic Exhortation of his pontificate, Evangelii Gaudium (the Joy of the Gospel), Pope Francis sets forth in an official document his vision for “new paths for the Church’s journey in years to come” and a new chapter of evangelization marked by “the joy of the Gospel (that) fills the hearts and lives of all who encounter Jesus.”

Pledging “a conversion of the papacy…more faithful to the meaning which Jesus Christ wished to give it,” the Holy Father asked Episcopal Conferences to embrace the collegial spirit that “has not  been fully realized.”

Catholics are challenged to find new and creative ways of proclaiming the Gospel to free its freshness from our “dull categories.” Emphasizing the essential missionary nature of the Church, the Pope calls for renewal of ecclesiastical structures to become more “mission oriented,” citing the need for a “pastoral and missionary conversion which cannot leave things as they presently are.” Certain “customs not directly connected to the heart of the Gospel, even some of which have deep historical roots” must be reexamined.

Those who seek God should not find a closed door, “our church doors should always be open”: “nor should the doors of the sacraments be closed for simply any reason”, Pope Francis cautioned. The Eucharist “is not a prize for the perfect but a powerful medicine and nourishment for the weak.” The church should be on the periphery, “bruised and dirty”…”rather than a Church … concerned with being at the centre and then ends by being caught up in a web of obsessions and procedures.” Our concern should be “the fact that many of our brothers and sisters are living without … the friendship of Jesus Christ.”

While emphasizing the need for the renewal of structures and the need to reclaim the missionary nature of the Church, the 48,000 word document makes it clear that church doctrines on abortion and women’s ordination remain unchanged but calls for “broader opportunities for a more incisive female presence in the Church”, in particular “in the various settings where important decisions are made.”

En la primera Exhortación Apostólica de su pontificado, Evangelii Gaudiam (la Alegría del Evangelio), el Papa Francisco establece, a través de un documento oficial, su visión de “nuevos caminos para la marcha de la Iglesia en los años venideros” y de un nuevo capítulo en la evangelización marcada por “la alegría del Evangelio que llena los corazones y la vida de todos los que se encuentran con Jesús.”

Prometiendo “una conversión del papado… más fiel al sentido que Jesucristo quiso darle,” el Santo Padre pidió a las Conferencias Episcopales que abracen el espíritu colegial, el cual “no ha sido plenamente realizado.”

Los Católicos tenemos el reto de encontrar nuevas y creativas maneras de proclamar el Evangelio y liberar su frescura de nuestros “esquemas aburridos.” Subrayando la naturaleza esencial misionera de la Iglesia, el Papa pide la renovación de las estructuras eclesiásticas para que la Iglesia se vuelva más “orientada a su misión” citando la necesidad de “una conversión pastoral y misionera que no puede dejar las cosas como están.” Por lo que deben reexaminarse ciertas “costumbres propias no directamente ligadas al núcleo del Evangelio, algunas muy arraigadas a lo largo de la historia.”

El Papa Francisco expresó que quienes buscan a Dios nunca deben encontrar una puerta cerrada, “las puertas de nuestra iglesia deberían estar siempre abiertas…tampoco las puertas de los sacramentos deberían cerrarse por cualquier motivo.” La Eucaristía “no es un premio para los perfectos sino un generoso remedio y alimento para los débiles.” La iglesia debe estar en las periferias “accidentada, herida y manchada… antes que [ser] una Iglesia… preocupada por ser el centro y que termine clausurada en una maraña de obsesiones y procedimientos.” Nuestra verdadera preocupación debería ser “que tantos hermanos nuestros vivan sin… la amistad de Jesucristo.”

Al mismo tiempo que hace hincapié en la necesidad de la renovación de las estructuras y la necesidad de reclamar la naturaleza misionera de la iglesia, el documento de 51,000 palabras pone en claro que la doctrina de la iglesia en referencia al aborto y la ordenación de mujeres permanece sin cambios pero nos dice que “es necesario ampliar los espacios para una presencia femenina más incisiva en la Iglesia,” particularmente “en los diversos lugares donde se toman las decisiones importantes.”
