With family and friends in attendance, nearly 150 people from 77 parishes and Catholic organizations were recognized by Bishop Kevin J. Farrell for their outstanding service to the church.
Those recognized were bestowed the Bishop’s Award for Service to the Church during a Mass and ceremony at the Cathedral Shrine of the Virgin of Guadalupe on Feb. 22.
“Today, our whole diocese comes together to celebrate, honor and give thanks to what I call the backbone of the Catholic Church: those who tend to the flock of God, those so many volunteers who do so much work,” Bishop Farrell said. “We honor all of those people who have made our church what it is today: a vibrant, Catholic and living church in every corner of this city. You are the agents of our church today of the New Evangelization. You are commissioned to make our church work.”
In a ceremony during the Mass, Bishop Farrell placed a personalized medal around the necks of each recipient.
Among the recipients was Andrée Hawkins, a parishioner at Christ the King Catholic Church who runs the parish’s Grief Ministry.
“When I went up and the bishop put the medal over my neck, he held my hands, said the sweetest words and brought tears to my eyes,” said Hawkins, whose great-great-grandfather Maxime Guillot hosted the diocese’s first recorded Mass in the parlor of his home in 1859. “When I got the letter saying that I would be receiving this award, I felt very humbled and shocked, to be honest. This day has been a very moving experience.”

Disfrutando la presencia de familiares y amigos, casi 150 personas de 77 parroquias y organizaciones Católicas fueron reconocidas por el Obispo Kevin J. Farrell por su destacado servicio a la Iglesia.
Los homenajeados recibieron el Premio del Obispo por Servicio a la Iglesia durante una Misa y ceremonia en la Catedral Santuario de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe el pasado 22 de Febrero.
El Obispo Farrell les dijo: "El día de hoy, nuestra diócesis se congrega para celebrar, honrar y dar gracias a lo que yo llamo la columna vertebral de la Iglesia Católica; quienes cuidan el rebaño de Dios, todos esos voluntarios que realizan tanto trabajo." El Obispo Farrell añadió: "homenajeamos a todas esas personas que han hecho que nuestra Iglesia sea lo que es actualmente: una Iglesia Católica, vibrante y viva en cada rincón de esta ciudad. Ustedes son los agentes de nuestra Iglesia actual, son los agentes de la Nueva Evangelización. Ustedes están encargados de que nuestra Iglesia siga adelante."
En un ceremonial durante la Misa, el Obispo Farrell colocó una medalla personalizada alrededor del cuello de cada homenajeado.
Entre los homenajeados se encontraba Andrée Hawkins, un feligrés de la Iglesia Católica Cristo Rey que dirige el Ministerio de Duelo de la parroquia.
"Cuando me acerqué hasta donde se encontraba el obispo, él colocó la medalla alrededor de mi cuello, sostuvo mis manos, y me dijo unas palabras tan amables que hicieron que me aparecieran lágrimas en los ojos," dijo Hawkins, cuyo tarabuelo Maxime Guillot organizó la primera Misa grabada de la diócesis en la sala de su casa en 1859. "Para ser honesto, cuando recibí la carta diciendo que iba a recibir este premio, me sentí muy honrado y asombrado. El día de hoy ha sido una experiencia verdaderamente conmovedora."
